Departamento de Ica
Ica
Located 303 km. south of Lima, Ica is made up most wide desert plains that stretch from the sea to the Andes, interspersed with dunes and huarango forests. However, Ica has fertile valleys that are planted with cotton, grapevines, and different varieties of fruit. The region is also blessed with natural resources and archeological remains, including the world-famous Nazca Lines.

The Nazca civilization was also renowned for its multi-colored ceramics and cloaks. The area also retains significant reminders of the Inca presence there. The Paracas Nature Reserve provides a haven for many species of sea and the Ballesta islands and San Gallán are a sanctuary for a great diversity of marine life.

Ica is also famous for its pisco, fiery liquor distilled from grapes that was developed after the Spaniards arrived, and takes its name from the port in the area. It has become a symbol of Peru’s cultural identity. Ica’s year-round sunny climate and fertile soils make it a prime wine-producing area and the Conquistadores were quick to see its potential and planted vines, which prospered and soon spread into neighboring valleys. As a result, the winemaking industry is one the area’s main economic activities.
Regional Museum of Ica
The Regional Museum of Ica houses the remains of the ancient cultures that developed on the southern coast. The pre-Inca rooms display fine textiles from the Paracas people, wonderful pieces from the Nazca culture, featuring amazing musical instruments and great pictures of the Nazca Lines. Here you can also see some spectacular weapons and would carvings from the Wari Empire, Ica Chincha and Inca culture.

On the other side of the Museum is the anthropological room, which exhibits human remains from the same cultures mentioned above, featuring deformed skulls, cranial surgery practiced on ancient Peruvians, beautiful head-dresses, well preserved mummies, including babies and trophy heads.
The Huacachina Lagoon
This beautiful oasis is located at 5 Km from Ica city, place in the desert with a small lagoon and is surrounded by sand dunes, palms and huarangos (carob tree) and beautiful houses around the shore. By the ends of the XIX century Huacachina was practically uninhabited, until the Italian Angela Perotti rediscovered the medical properties of water and sand of the lagoon, especially for the cure of skin and rheumatism illnesses. Buggies and sand boarding has become popular on the sand dunes near Huacachina, an ideal area to take to the steep sandy slopes of the desert.
